Super Eagles Captain Troost-Ekong Dismisses History As Nigeria Aims For Crucial Win Against Rwanda

Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has declared the team’s readiness for their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Rwanda this Friday, insisting that the players are not concerned about past struggles in Kigali.

The three-time African champions have a poor track record against the Amavubi when it comes to away games, with their last outing in Kigali ending in a frustrating goalless draw. However, Troost-Ekong made it clear that the current squad is more focused on the future than the history books.

“Actually, we read about that in some places but we are not bothered. I was part of the last game in Kigali which ended scoreless, but we know that we cannot afford a draw this time,” Troost-Ekong told thenff.com.

He further stressed the team’s determination to secure all three points, which he believes is essential for reigniting their World Cup qualification campaign.

“Our objective is to pick the three points and bring some life back into our campaign. We are certainly not concerned about history books and what has happened before now. Qualification for the FIFA World Cup is our priority,” the center-back affirmed.

Opinion: Will This Super Eagles Team Break The Kigali Curse?

Troost-Ekong’s statement reflects a commendable sense of focus and determination. However, the task at hand is no walk in the park. For too long, the Super Eagles have struggled to assert dominance away from home, particularly in games that require tactical discipline and mental toughness.

While history might not matter to the current squad, lessons from previous encounters cannot be entirely dismissed. The team’s inability to convert chances and maintain defensive solidity has been its Achilles’ heel.

However, under the leadership of Eric Chelle, there appears to be a fresh sense of purpose. The squad selection has emphasized experience, attacking flair, and defensive stability. With players like Victor Osimhen leading the attack, and Troost-Ekong marshalling the defense, there is every reason to believe Nigeria can finally break the Kigali curse.

But will the Super Eagles learn from the past and deliver a performance worthy of a World Cup qualifying contender?
