Ruben Amorim Downplays Europa League Ambitions, Says Manchester United Have Bigger Priorities
Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, has suggested that winning the UEFA Europa League is not the club’s main priority this season, emphasizing that building a strong team is more important in the long run.
Speaking ahead of United’s Europa League clash with Real Sociedad on Thursday, Amorim acknowledged that many view the competition as the Red Devils' best shot at silverware and a route back to the UEFA Champions League. However, he made it clear that his focus is on long-term success rather than short-term triumphs.
"People see the Europa League as the only competition we can win, as well as a route to qualifying for the UEFA Champions League," Amorim said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano. "But to tell you the truth, I think we have bigger things to focus on. I know it sounds strange to say that, but what we are trying to build here is more important than winning a cup at this moment."
A Realistic Take or a Lack of Ambition?
Amorim’s words will likely divide opinions among Manchester United fans. On one hand, his approach reflects a desire to instill stability and long-term growth, something the club has struggled with in recent years. On the other hand, given United’s current struggles—14th in the Premier League and recently knocked out of the FA Cup by Fulham—many would argue that winning a trophy, even the Europa League, should be a priority.
For a club of Manchester United’s stature, success is measured in silverware. While building a strong foundation is crucial, fans expect results along the way. If Amorim’s project takes too long to show progress, patience could wear thin.
With their league campaign in turmoil, the Europa League remains a golden opportunity to salvage something from the season. The question is: will Amorim’s long-term vision justify sacrificing short-term success? Only time will tell.
