Manchester United Boss Ruben Amorim Urges Mainoo and Zirkzee to Improve Ahead of Lyon Clash

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has singled out Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee as two players who must take their game to the next level as the Red Devils gear up for their UEFA Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon on Thursday night.

Speaking during a pre-match press conference, Amorim praised both youngsters for their promise but made it clear that growth is still needed if they are to reach elite levels.

“When I see Kobbie [Mainoo], I see a lot of talent,” the Portuguese tactician said.
“But the way I see it – and I could be wrong – I see some things that Kobbie has to improve. His pace in the game. He needs to improve in the build-up.”

Turning his attention to new signing Joshua Zirkzee, Amorim acknowledged the striker’s development but encouraged a more ruthless streak:

“I think he’s improving in all aspects.
But I think he needs to be more selfish, and that’s a thing when you play as a striker.”

✍️ Opinion: Honest Words from Amorim, But the Timing Matters

There’s no doubt Ruben Amorim’s remarks come from a place of mentorship, but his candid approach just before a European quarter-final might raise eyebrows. That said, both Mainoo and Zirkzee have been in the spotlight recently — Mainoo for his breakout performances and Zirkzee for flashes of brilliance that have yet to become consistent.

Calling on Mainoo to improve his tempo and build-up play is fair, especially in a midfield role that demands maturity and quick decision-making at the top level. At just 18, the youngster has already shown poise beyond his years — but Amorim clearly wants more.

Zirkzee, meanwhile, has been creative in link-up play but sometimes too generous in front of goal. Amorim’s challenge to be “more selfish” could be what unlocks the striker’s full potential, especially in high-stakes matches like the one against Lyon.

United fans will be watching closely to see how both players respond — and whether Amorim’s tough love translates into progress on the pitch.

🔴 Can Mainoo pick up the pace? Will Zirkzee become United’s killer up front? Thursday’s clash might just begin to answer those questions.
