Imama Amapakabo Remains Hopeful as Abia Warriors Eye Top Three Finish Despite Enyimba Defeat
Despite a narrow 2-1 loss to Enyimba in Sunday’s fiery Oriental Derby, Abia Warriors head coach Imama Amapakabo remains optimistic about his team’s chances of finishing in the top three of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) — and possibly securing a continental spot.
The Warriors had a promising start at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba, taking the lead through Anthony Ijoma, much to the delight of the travelling fans. But it was not to last, as Enyimba rallied back with thunderous long-range efforts from Kalu Nweke and Joseph Atule to seal a dramatic comeback victory.
Despite the setback, Abia Warriors still sit in third place on the NPFL table — a position many wouldn't have predicted at the start of the season. However, with several strong teams breathing down their necks, the pressure is now firmly on.
“We’re Still in the Race” — Amapakabo
Coach Imama, speaking after the match, refused to let the defeat dampen his side’s continental aspirations.
“We’re still in the race. We’ll chase it and run as fast as we possibly can. So, let’s see how it goes. Kudos to the boys — they gave it their all,” he said.
He praised the team’s performance, highlighting their attacking intent and chances created, even though they ultimately fell short.
“I think in terms of goal creation, we had the better chances, but unfortunately, we lost to two strikes from outside the box,” he added.
Looking ahead, the coach emphasized the importance of regrouping and focusing on their next fixture against Rivers United, another heavyweight in the league.
“We’ll go back, review the game, and then prepare for Rivers United, which is our next match.”
🗣️ Opinion: Warriors Must Match Ambition With Execution
There’s no doubt that Abia Warriors have shown flashes of brilliance this season under Imama Amapakabo’s leadership. Their rise into the top three is commendable and shows a team growing in confidence and identity. However, to stay in the fight for continental football, the Warriors must do more than just compete — they must convert dominance into points, especially in tight matches like this.
Losing to Enyimba, a team with championship pedigree, is not shameful. But at this crucial stage of the season, fine margins make all the difference. Two goals from distance are a reminder that defensive focus and midfield shielding must improve if Warriors are to maintain their current position.
Amapakabo’s optimism is refreshing and shows belief in his squad. But belief alone won’t be enough. Against Rivers United, the Warriors must show resilience, character, and — most importantly — a winning mentality. The road to continental football is tough, but it’s still very much in their hands.
Can the Warriors go the distance? Time — and grit — will tell.
