The Inspector-General of Police has prohibited the use of POS machines in police stations and facilities across the country.

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a directive prohibiting the use of Point-of-Sale (POS) machines and other mobile money transaction devices within police stations and facilities nationwide.

According to the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the decision comes in response to public concerns regarding alleged illicit transactions and collusion between POS operators and certain police personnel.

In a statement, the Nigeria Police Force reiterated the ban on utilizing POS machines and other electronic mobile money transaction devices within police premises. Despite previous directives, some commands and formations have continued to disregard this regulation.

The IGP emphasized that any violation of the ban would result in severe sanctions on the leadership of the affected commands and formations. The use of electronic payment devices within police facilities poses significant risks, including compromising sensitive information, financial irregularities, and facilitating illicit activities. Strict adherence to this directive is therefore mandatory.

All officers and personnel are urged to comply with this directive without exception. The IGP warned that any police officer or POS operator found contravening this order or involved in illicit financial transactions will face appropriate disciplinary and criminal action in accordance with existing laws and regulations. Command/Formation leadership will also be held accountable for non-compliance.
