'Afrobeats has substance' - dancehall musician Spice disagrees with Buju Banton.

'Afrobeats has substance' - dancehall musician Spice disagrees with Buju Banton.

Spice, a Jamaican dancehall diva, has clashed with her countrymen, reggae great Buju Banton, who says Afrobeats music is "f*ckery".

During a recent interview on the 'Drink Champs' podcast, Banton criticized Afrobeats artists for supposedly utilizing their music to profit themselves rather than speaking about social issues.

He also argued that Afrobeats music lacked substance and would vanish over time.

He went on to accuse Afrobeats artists of taking Jamaican reggae and dancehall music without crediting the source.

Spice responded in an Instagram Live conversation with Nigerian media figure Daddy Freeze, saying Afrobeats isn't "f*ckery" and emphasized that she is a lover of the genre.

The 'Queen of Dancehall' stated that, contrary to Buju Banton's statements, there are Afrobeats artists who create conscious music.

"I do not believe Afrobeats is f*ckery. "That's absurd," she remarked.

"I am a lover of Afrobeats. I believe he [Buju Banton] was referring to the fact that afrobeats do not perform cultural songs, which I do not believe to be true. Because I listen to and know Burna Boy's music. I know Burna Boy recorded a song about EndSars. He also recorded 'Monsters You Made', a cultural song. Other afrobeats artists, such as 2Face and Falz, create songs on political issues in Nigeria. So, I believe there are Afrobeats singers who perform cultural songs.

"The trouble with Buju Banton is that he doesn't grasp that artists differ. So, I think it's unfair to label a genre as f*ckery, especially one that's doing so well. We can't deny it. Iā€™m the queen of dancehall but afrobeats is ruling the world now.ā€
