‘I was first young Nigerian artiste to blow up’ – Wizkid
Afrobeats singer Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, aka Wizkid, has dubbed himself the first young Nigerian artist to achieve popularity.
He thanked his parents for allowing him the freedom to pursue his aspirations.
He did, however, admit that his parents were initially skeptical about his chances of making it in the music industry.
"I was the first young artist to break out on the [Nigerian music] scene. So my parents didn't believe there was a chance," he told Uplift X.
"Parents, especially those from Africa, may be uncertain about their children's career choices, especially if their parents are Christian and Muslim, and there has never been an argument about religion or their children's interests." My dad would say, "Do whatever you want." You are free to be a Muslim or a Christian, whichever you like.
"I have a great fondness for my parents. That has helped shape who I am now. "All I knew was that love was the only thing that kept them together for so long."
Wizkid has declared plans to release a new album in commemoration of his late mother, who died on August 18, 2023, in London.
The album is called 'Morayo' after his mother's middle name.
