Two weeks to election: Tension hits Imo APC as candidates await primary results

Just two weeks before the main elections on September 21, the Imo State All Progressives Congress, APC, is tense as candidates and other party members await the results of the party primary elections, which were held on September 3 in various LGAs and wards across the state.

The tension rose when reported results from the just ended exercise flooded various social outlets, naming certain persons as the key exercise winners.

However, the party's state leadership had already cautioned hopefuls and other party members to disregard the list and wait for the official announcement of the results, which it stated would be issued by the party.

TalkTalk Nigeria discovered that, despite the party leadership's assurances, several hopefuls appeared dissatisfied with the delay in the results of an election that they said was held five days earlier.

A chairmanship candidate from one of the LGAs, who prefers not to be named for political reasons, expressed dissatisfaction with the party leadership's handling of the situation.

He stated that while they are still waiting for the official publication of the results, some of the applicants have begun to celebrate based on the results that have circulated on social media platforms.

Speaking additionally, Hyginus Onumajuru, a card-carrying member of the party, claimed that there is the chance of believing in the lists circulating across social media, hinting that there is no reason the party leadership will give that will be acceptable for an exercise conducted almost a week ago and the results are yet to be released.

Onumajuru further stated that the failure to announce the findings after five days of waiting is a clear indication that the state party leadership may not be in charge of the exercise.

"This could be a clear indication that the party leadership does not have control over the primaries; if not, what could have caused the delay in releasing the results?" It has already caused fear among aspirants who are eagerly awaiting the official announcement, and seeing certain lists flying around has thrown off the whole process. Debunking the story isn't enough; let us see the true results," he stated.

He went on to say that it is wrong how the party leadership treats those who have already spent  huge sums of money and time purchasing forms and touring villages meeting with their people for the sole purpose of securing political positions under its platform.

In a similar spirit, one of the state's local tabloids announced in its banner headline that candidate lists for the September 21 exercise are already with ISIEC.

According to one of the social media platforms, 12 names from Ohaji/Egbema LGA have already appeared as the party's councillor candidates ahead of the elections.

Another list claimed to include over 22 names of the current single administrators. Some contenders have already begun to receive congratulations messages from their well-wishers and supporters, primarily from lists floating about.

As of the time of posting this story, the party's leadership, except from an earlier statement given a few days ago by Julian Chijioke, media aid to the State party Chairman, Macdonald Ebere, had not to make any additional formal comment about the current situation.

The election is almost two weeks away, and there has been no major political activity from the various political parties as the people of the state prepare for the September 21 exercise.
