May D Warns Fans Against Comparing Him to Wizkid, Declares Himself a "Different Breed"
Nigerian singer, Akinmayokun Awodumila, popularly known as May D, has issued a stern warning to fans, asking them to refrain from comparing him to any of his industry colleagues, particularly Wizkid.
In a bold statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Soundtrack crooner emphasized that he is in a league of his own.
"Don’t ever compare me to anyone in this industry again !! Especially Wiz!! I’m a different breed! God’s baby," he wrote.
A History of Unfinished Business?
This is not the first time May D has drawn parallels between himself and some of Afrobeats’ biggest names. He previously claimed that if not for his fallout with Square Records, the label owned by P-Square, he would have been on the same level as Wizkid and Davido today.
May D, who rose to fame in 2011 under Square Records, parted ways with the label in 2012 under controversial circumstances. While his career saw moments of brilliance, including hits like Ile Ijo and Soundtrack, he never quite attained the mainstream dominance of Wizkid or Davido.
An Industry Without Fair Play?
May D’s outburst raises an important conversation about the industry’s dynamics. Talent alone does not always guarantee success, as management, record labels, and industry politics play crucial roles in an artist’s rise. Many fans acknowledge May D’s musical prowess, but his inability to sustain momentum compared to Wizkid or Davido has left room for speculation.
Fans React: Is the Comparison Justified?
Following his post, fans have had mixed reactions—some agreeing that May D was once a strong force in the industry, while others believe he is now far behind Wizkid in terms of achievements and relevance.
Whether May D can reclaim his place in the Afrobeats hierarchy remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—he refuses to be overlooked or compared to anyone, including Wizkid.
