2026 WCQ: Why Super Eagles lost to Benin Republic – Finidi

Finidi George, the head coach of the Super Eagles, blamed his team's 2-1 loss against Benin Republic on poor defending and a lack of attention.

Following the unexpected defeat, the former African champions now face a mountain to climb in their effort to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria is fifth in the Group C rankings, with three points after four games.
It was the second time the Cheetahs had defeated the Super Eagles in 17 meetings.


Gernot Rohr's men lead the rankings with seven points.

"We scored a good goal, but then we lost concentration, they equalised, and they gained momentum," Finidi told the media after the game.

"We did not defend adequately against the goalkeeper's long kick, and they scored their first goal.

"We dominated the game, but we didn't defend well.

"If you don't use your chances and defend properly in a World Cup qualifier, you will pay the price.

"First half was good but for the goals (we conceded), while in the second half we pushed and defended well."
