Nigerian media gave Burna Boy credits for records I set – Seun Kuti
Seun Kuti, a Grammy-nominated Afrobeat singer, has complained that Burna Boy is getting unfairly credited for records set by him and others in the Nigerian music industry.
He remembered that Burna Boy was widely regarded as the first musician to perform at Coachella in 2020, despite Kuti's debut at the festival in 2012.
He also said that before Burna Boy garnered his first Grammy nomination for Best World Music Album with African Giant, his older brother, Femi Kuti, had received several nominations in the same category.
In a recent interview with The Public Republic, Kuti bemoaned that his record 'Black Times' was nominated for Best World Music record years ago but was not evaluated by any African award organisers.
The controversial singer claimed that despite receiving another Grammy nomination for his contributions to Janelle Monae's 'Age of Pleasure,' which was nominated in the Album of the Year category at the 2024 Grammys, the media failed to mention him among the Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammy Awards.
"My brother [Femi Kuti] has been nominated for many Grammys. They have nominated me, and I was also nominated in the previous edition. They [Nigerian media] did not mention my name among the Nigerian artists nominated for the 66th Grammys. That's what they do every time, like if I were from Togo.
"That's how they said Burna boy was the first Nigerian artiste to play in Coachella in 2020 where me I've played in 2012 as if I'm from Togo," he said.
