Seun Kuti Weighs in on Senate Sexual Harassment Controversy, Criticizes Celebrities’ Silence
Afrobeat artist, Seun Kuti, has publicly declared his support for Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan amid her ongoing face-off with Senate President Godswill Akpabio over allegations of sexual harassment.
The controversy erupted after Akpoti-Uduaghan claimed in a television interview that Akpabio refused to hear her motion on the Ajaokuta Steel Complex because she rejected his sexual advances. Her allegations have since sparked intense debate, with the female senator facing backlash, even from some of her fellow lawmakers.
Seun Kuti Calls Out Nigerian Celebrities and Feminists
During an Instagram Live session, Seun Kuti expressed disappointment over the lack of public support for Akpoti-Uduaghan, particularly from Nigerian feminists and celebrities who are usually vocal about social issues.
"About the sexual harassment case in the Senate, I stand with the Senator [Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan] 100 per cent. Because she isn’t even the first one to make such an allegation [against the Senate President]."
Kuti criticized the entertainment industry for selectively choosing which issues to speak on, highlighting their outspokenness in cases involving fellow celebrities while ignoring serious political matters.
"They had so much to say about Burna Boy’s alleged broken promise to Sophia Egbueje, but they are silent on this matter. These kinds of things cannot continue in this country."
He further alleged that many Nollywood actors and actresses benefit from government grants and, as a result, avoid controversial topics that could affect their financial interests.
A Deeper Issue of Silence and Power Dynamics
Kuti’s comments shed light on a broader issue of silence when powerful figures are implicated in sensitive matters. If the allegations against Akpabio hold any truth, it raises questions about accountability in Nigeria’s political system.
While Kuti admitted he couldn’t personally lead protests for Akpoti-Uduaghan, he urged Nigerian women to rally around the senator and ensure that such allegations are taken seriously.
The case remains a developing story, and whether it leads to further investigations or gets buried under political influence remains to be seen. One thing is certain—Kuti’s stance has reignited conversations about power, gender dynamics, and selective activism in Nigeria.
