Nnadozie wins Player of the Match award, reveals ‘secret’ behind penalty save

Nnadozie wins Player of the Match award, reveals ‘secret’ behind penalty save

Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Super Falcons' interim captain, was named Player of the Match in the 0-0 draw with Canada in the current FIFA Women's World Cup.

Despite the lack of opportunities or goals, the Group B contest at Melbourne Rectangular Stadium featured several memorable moments.

Nnadozie, who saved a penalty kick one minute into the second half against nine-time African champions Nigeria and defending Olympic winners Canada, was one of the game's bright spots.

Speaking to reporters in Australia after the game, the 22-year-old Paris FC goalkeeper claimed her save was more a product of self-belief than any studied grasp of Christine Sinclair's penalty-taking skills.

"I never saw her play penalties," she explained. I simply believed in myself. The last time we played, she scored against me. It's 1-1 between me and Sinclair right now!" Nnadozie said.

Apart from denying Sinclair's penalty, Nnadozie made a number of important saves to secure a valuable point for the Super Falcons ahead of their second group encounter against co-hosts Australia.

While congratulating Nnadozie on Nigeria's first World Cup point, Super Falcons coach Randy Waldrum emphasized that she is one of the greatest young goalkeepers in the world.

Following their success against Canada, the Super Falcons will want to get back on track against Australia next Thursday in order to strengthen their chances of making it out of the group stage.

Thursday’s tie is scheduled for Brisbane Stadium at 11 a.m.

Australia are top of Group B after their one-goal victory over debutants Ireland.
