2026 WCQ: How we outsmarted Super Eagles – Benin’s midfielder, Dossou
Jordel Dossou, a Benin Republic midfielder, has revealed the strategy that helped them overcome Nigeria's defenders in a 2-1 victory in a 2026 World Cup qualifier on Monday night.
Dossou equalized in Abidjan after Raphael Onyedika started the scoring for the Super Eagles.
He slipped in behind Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi to score an even better equaliser.
Ajayi missed his clearance header, and Bassey dallied on the ball, allowing Dossou to grab it and finish past goalie Stanley Nwabali.
Dossou has recently stated that he spoke with colleague Steve Mounié before his goals.
"This type of play was worked on during training. "We know Mounié Steve wins almost all duels," Dossou told 24haubenin.
"Well before the goal action, Steve called me and informed me that because Ajayi (a Nigerian player) is always on me, I'd have to adjust my plan.
"On the first occasion, he let the ball pass; unfortunately, I missed it. For the second time, I hid behind the defender, and as soon as Steve released the ball. I emerged and took the ball from him in order to equalize."
